The big wheel to the left is used to reverse the main engine. The wheel had to be turned lots of turns to reverse the steamship from full ahead to full astern. A small steam-engine was installed to help the engineer to turn it fast. The eccentric for that machine is visible to the left of the wheel.

Steamesteem means that I like steam boilers and steamships, paddle steamers as well as screw-propelled steamships.
